The Sound from the Temple block
By Wu Haige
Tr Rhapsodia (晚?xiàng)?
I
The sound from the temple block is knocking on the house beams and the dust in sleep
From the dust I wake up. I am a grain grinded by history. On the beams and across the hollow space
The wooden block beats endlessly, sending the living eternity, love
Insincerity and lies all into bed and bier
Except the dust, that is waken up
II
The tears deposited into the dust are knocked out
The fiery tears nourish it, an eternal life
Oh dust, my greatest love of all. I go to sleep hugging the flames
Keep striking, wooden block, you happy block. Tap, tap, tap
III
The gracious taps knock open the tightly shut window, breaking the happy spider-weaved web and the glittering obsessions
Keep knocking, wooden block! Wake me up from my bier
Wake up the stones in slumber; crush the beam columns. I’m a soul in need of knocks
My transparency is owed to the light. The sound of the temple block is knocking on the withy light
IV
Dusk is waked up by the knocks and so is the setting sun idling on the horizon
Well aware its route and the thickness of the night. It touches with fine nerves
Night is waked up by the knocks. The sound of the knocking reaches every corner in depth, the dark place of my heart.
Everything on the earth wakes up. Riding on the back of the setting sun I listen. The sound of the temple block
Knocking the rocking boat
V
The knocks wake up the snow, the mume blossoms dormant beneath. The knocks open clusters of petals from the old iron branches
The flames are running through the knocks. Snow is melting into spring water, permeating everywhere, releasing some secrete
I pay my tribute to the snow. The sound of the wooden block is knocking the death
Get moving, lotus leaves! Get going, shoal!
Stones cannot block, as rules cannot be potent
VI
I become the deathless among the death. I’m from the abyss yet hand in hand with abyss
I’m from the wooden block and yet knock the block, which I paint and inscribe in
The magic figure of my wish. I set the joss sticks for it, water it with man’s blood, and cover with the sticks of time.
