eligible，illegible

這一對形容詞的拼法和讀音有點相近，但涵義和使用場合卻大不相同。

Eligible/’eliDN+bl/的意思“合格的”、“合適的”、“可采用的”(qualified，suitable or fit to be chosen)。它的副詞是’eligibly，名詞是?eligi’bility.例：

Mr.Lin is eligible for the election.

林先生在此次選舉中有被選資格。

Ms.Wang is an eligible candidate for this vacant position.

汪小姐是有補此空缺資格的候選人。

They are seeking for an eligible young man for the governor’s daughter.

他們正在為總督的女兒物色一位合適的青年。

Illegible/i’leDNibl/的意思是“難讀的”、“難辨認的”(difficult or impossible to read or distinguish)。它的副詞是il’legibly，名詞是il’legibility.例：

I really cannot make out his illegible handwriting.

我確實是辨認不出他潦草的字體。

Do you know this Chinese character?It’s so illegible that no one can recognize it!

你認識這個中國字嗎?它寫得太草，無人會認得!

現(xiàn)將eligible和illegible用在一個句子里，以便區(qū)分：

A person might be eligible for a certain appointment despite his illegible handwriting.

一個人的字體盡管寫得潦草，可是他可能適合擔任某一種工作。

請注意，unreadable的意義和illegible相近，但涵義并不相同。unreadable是“索然無味，不值一讀”(not interesting enough to read)，而illegible是“字體潦草，難以辨認”(not plain enough to be deciphered)。下面舉一例以說明unreadable的使用場合：

It seems to me today’s editorial is unreadable.

我覺得，今日的社論不值一讀。
