一、“手指”的英文表示法

漢語中說的“手指”，說成英語是finger。如：

I’ve hurt my finger. 我傷了手指。

She was pointing her fingers at me. 她用手指指著我。

No one’s fingers are equally long. 沒有一個人的手指是一樣長。

The club is gripped mainly by the last three fingers of the left hand. 球桿主要靠左手的最后三個指頭握緊。

二、五個手指的表示法

五個手指的英語表示法如下：

拇指：thumb;

食指：index finger / forefinger / first finger;

中指：second finger / middle finger / long finger;

無名指：third finger / ring finger;

小指：fourth finger / little finger。

由于人們習慣于將戒指戴在左手上，所以有的人還作了以下細分：右手的無名指叫 third finger, 左手的無名指叫 ring finger。

嚴格說來，拇指叫thumb，它不是finger。如：

He held it between his finger and thumb. 他用拇指和食指捏著它。

所以在談及手指數目時，人們常說：

There are four fingers and one thumb on each hand.

但也有人簡單地說：

There are five fingers on each hand.

三、finger與介詞的有用搭配

表示用手指，通常搭配介詞with。如：

She told her son not to eat with his fingers. 她告訴她的兒子不要用手抓飯菜吃。

He tore open the envelope with clumsy fingers. 他用拙笨的手指撕開信封。

表示手指上戴著戒指，通常搭配介詞on。如：

Why do you wear that ring on your first finger? 你怎么把那戒指戴在食指上?

He took a ring out of his pocket and put it on her finger. 他從口袋里掏出一枚戒指戴在她的手指上。

In Britain, wedding-rings are worn on the third finger of the left hand. 在英國，結婚戒指戴在左手無名指上。

四、“手指”與“腳趾”

“手指”與“腳趾”不同，后者的英文是toe，注意不是foot finger。如：

Touch your toes without bending your knees! 試著不屈膝去夠你的腳趾!

I’m terribly sorry I stepped on your toes. 我踩到你的腳趾，真是抱歉!

I draw on your fingers and toes, and you have to work out which one I’m touching. 我在你的手指和腳趾上面畫，你必須指出我觸及的是哪一個。

五、有關“手指”的習俗

按我國習俗，當我們要數數時，通常是先張開手掌，再由拇指開始依次往下數;而英美人則不同，他們通常是先握拳，再由拇指或小指依次伸直，或者是先張開手掌，用另一只手的食指，指著張開手的手指從拇指開始往下數。

在招呼別人到自己這邊來時，中國人習慣于先將手掌向下伸出，然后手指向下彎曲數下;而英美人則習慣于將手掌向上伸出，然后手指向上彎曲數下。
