這三個(gè)片語(yǔ)的意義各不相同。
In the south的意思是“在南部”，指在某地區(qū)之內(nèi)。例：
This plant grows in the south of Africa.
這種植物生長(zhǎng)在非洲的南部。
Guangzhou is in the south of China.
廣州在中國(guó)的南部。
On the south的意思是“在南邊”、“與南邊接近”。例：
Bolivia is bounded on the north and east by Brazil，on the south by Argentina and Paraguay，and on the west by Peru and Chile.
玻利維亞的北邊和東邊與巴西接壤，南邊與阿根廷和巴拉圭接壤，西邊與秘魯和智利接壤。

順便在此指出，south和southern的比較級(jí)是more southern.最高級(jí)是 southmost和southernmost;north和northern亦然。值得注意的是，east和west有所不同。它們的原級(jí)是 east(eastern)，west(western)，比較級(jí)是more eastern和more western，最高級(jí)只有一種形式，即easternmost和westernmost，不能寫(xiě)作eastmost和westrmost.
