in possession of，in the possession of

這一對片語都表示“占有”之意，但前者表示主動意義，后者表示被動涵義。為此，前者一般譯作“占有”，后者譯為“被…占有”或“為…所有”。例：

Who is in possession of this estate?

這是誰的地產?

Our university is now in possession of those buildings.

現在那些樓房是屬于我們大學的。

試比較下例：

Those buildings are now in the possession of our university.

現在那些樓房歸我們大學所有。

從上例可見，第二和第三個例句意義相同，但表達方式不一樣。另一個近似的片語是come into one’s possession，其義為“落入某人之手”，如：
