empty，vacant，hollow

這一組詞都表示“空的”意思，但涵義有所不同

Empty的意思是“里面沒有東西”、“一無所有”，具有“空無一物”的隱含意義，它可以用來描繪box、vessel、cupboard、bag、purse、room、house、street、stomach、head 等詞。例：

This trunk is empty of its contents.

這只箱子空空如也。

We found the room empty.

我們發現房間里空無一物。

At midnight even the busiest street is empty.

午夜時分，甚至最繁忙的大道上也不見人影。

Vacant的意思是“閑者的”、“無人占據的”，著重指臨時性的情況，如：vacant seat、vacant apartment、vacant position等。例：

We have no vacant position here.

我們這里沒有空職。

A vacant seat was found in this compartment.

在這個車廂里找到了一個空的座位。

請注意，當empty和vacant用以修飾同一個名詞時，它們的意義有所不同。例如an empty house是既沒有家具也沒有人居住的空房子;a vacant house是指可能有家具放著，但暫時無人居住的房子。同理，an empty chair是既沒有人坐也沒有人東西放著的椅子;a vacant chair是指暫時空著無人坐的椅子。

Hollow的意思是“空心的”、“中空的”、“空洞的”、“下陷的”，它常與tree、ball、cheeks、voice、sound、words、promise等詞連用，由此可見，它既可用以指實物的“中空”，亦可指 words、promise、compliments的“虛假”，用于后者場合是比喻意義。例：

This is a hollow tree.

這是一棵中空的樹。

I don’t like to hear his hollow words.

我不喜歡聽他那些空洞的話。

The tears rolled down her hollow cheeks.

淚水從她下陷的雙頰流了下來。

His argument sounds hollow.

他的論點空洞。
