not all，not any，not both，not either

這四個片語在涵義上各不相同。

not all的意思是“非全體”，相當(dāng)于only some;not any的意思是“全不”，相當(dāng)于none;not both作“僅一個”解，相當(dāng)于only one;not either作“兩個都個”解，相當(dāng)于neither.

請對比下列各句：

I do not know all of them.

我僅認(rèn)識他們之中的幾個人(或一部分人)。

I do not know any of them.

這些人我一個都不認(rèn)識。

I do not know both of them.

在這兩個人中，我只認(rèn)識一個。

I do not know either of them.

這兩個人我一個也不認(rèn)識。

上面四個句子亦可改寫為：

I know some of them.

I know none of them.

I know only one of them.

I know neither of them.

值得注意的是，not all指“并不是所有的…都…”，not both指“并不是兩個…都…”。在英語中，它們稱為“部分否定”(partial negation)。另有一些英語副詞和not 搭配使用時，也是表示類似的涵義。例：

not always=sometimes

not everywhere = somewhere

not entirely=somewhat

not wholly=in some degree/to some extent
