什么是愛?

A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home from the war. He called his parents from San Francisco.這是一個最終從戰場歸來的士兵的故事。他從舊金山打電話給他的父母：

"Mom and Dad, I’m coming home, but I’ve a favor to ask. I have a friend I’d like to bring home with me."“爸爸媽媽，我回來了，可是我有個請求。我想帶一個朋友和我一起回家?！?/p>

"Sure!" they replied, "We’d love to meet him"“當然好啊!”他們回答，“我們會很高興見到他的。”

"There’s something you should know, the son continued, he was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. "He stepped on a land mine and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us."“有些事情你們應該了解到，”兒子又繼續說道，“他在戰場上受了重傷。由于踩到了地雷，他失去了一只胳膊和一條腿，他現在沒地方可去，我想請他和我們一起生活?！?/p>

"I’m sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live."“兒子，聽到那個我很難過，或許我們可以幫他找個安身之處?！?/p>

"No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us."“不行，爸爸媽媽，我想讓他和我們一起生活。”

"Son," said the father, "you don’t know what you’re asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to live, and we can’t let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He’ll find a way to live on his own."“兒子，”父親又接著說，“你不知道自己在說些什么。像他這樣的殘疾人會對我們的生活造成很大的負擔。我們還要過自己的生活，不能讓這樣的事情干擾我們的生活。我認為你應該先回家然后忘了他，他會找到自己的一片天空的?！?/p>

At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him.就在此時兒子掛斷了電話，他的父母再也沒有他的消息了。

A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building, they were told. The police believed it was suicide. The grief-stricken parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son.然而幾天后，他們接到了舊金山的警察打來的電話，被告知他們兒子已經墜樓身亡了。警方相信這是一起自殺案件。于是這對傷心欲絕的父母飛往舊金山，被帶到停尸間去辨認兒子的遺體。

They recognized him, but to their horror they also discovered something they didn’t know, their son had only one arm and one leg.他們認出了他，但令他們感到驚駭的是，他們發現了之前不知道的一些事情：他們的兒子居然只有一只胳臂和一條腿。
