have，there is

若將I have a pen in my pocket和There is a pen in my pocket譯成漢語，我們便會發現句中的have和there都作“有”解，似乎無甚區別可言，其實并不然。它們的不同之處是：

Have是實義詞;表示是誰所擁有的“有”，一般說來，句中的主語總在have之前(疑問句和強調語氣的倒裝句例外)。There is則是虛詞，在句中只起形式的作用，表示“存在”(exist)之意，句中的主語一般總在There is之后。

漢語的“有”既可以表示擁有(如：“我有五部詞典”的“有”)，又可以表示事物的存在(如：“桌上有五部詞典”的“有”)。在英語中，若要表示這兩個 “有”，就必須用兩種不同的方式，即分別譯成：I have five dictionaries和There are five dictionaries on the desk.

由此可見，have和there is譯成漢語后，意義雖然相同，但在英語里卻各有不同的使用場合。初學英語的人由于沒有掌握好這兩種不同的表達手段，會把have 和there is混淆一起，造成下列的錯誤：

My pocket has one hundred dollars.(錯)

There are one hundred dollars in my pocket.(對)

The Island Eastern Corridor has a lot of cars.(錯)

There are a lot of cars in the Island Eastern Corridor.(對)

請注意，there is和there are都表示“有”的涵義，前者用于單數場合，后者用于復數場合，但在英美人的口語中，there is也經常用于復數名詞之前。如：

Hurry up!There are only five minutes left.

快點!只剩下五分鐘時間啦。

There is a bed，two desks and five chairs in the room.

房間里有一張床、兩張桌子和五把椅子。

還需注意，動詞have在英國和美國的用法有所不同。例如，“你有孩子嗎?”在美國英語中是Do you have children?在英國英語中卻是：Have you any children?或Have you got any children?
