◆above prep.
1. 表示“在……上方”、“高于”(與 below 相對)。如：
The sun rose above the horizon. 太陽已升到地平線以上。
The plane flew above the clouds. 飛機在云層上飛行。

2. 表示在地位、級別、能力、資歷、重要性等方面“超過”、“在……之上”、“比……強”。如：
He is above the others in ability. 他的能力優于其他人。
He is above me in every way. 他各個方面都比我強。
As a scholar, he is far above me. 作為一個學者，他遠遠超過了我。
3. 表示在程度或限度等方面“超過”、“超越”等，這類短語通常用作表語。如：
The book is above me (my understanding). 這本書我讀不懂。
The lecture was above the heads of most of the audience. 大部分聽眾聽不懂這個演講。
His heroism was above (beyond) all praise. 他的英勇行為 非言辭所能贊揚。
注：以上用法中的 above 有時可用 beyond 代之，尤其是其后接的是人稱代詞或人名時。如：
The problem is above (beyond) me. 這個問題我不懂。
4. 表示因優秀或出色等而“不致于”、“不屑于”、“不會”等，主要指道德方面，在句中主要用作表語：
She is above telling a lie. 她不致于說謊。
He is above doing such things. 他不致于做出那樣的事來。
He is above meanness and deceit. 他不致于做出卑劣和欺騙的事情來。
If you want to learn, you must not be above asking questions. 你如果要學習，就要不恥下問。
◆ above & over prep. & adv.
1. 兩者均可用的場合：
(1) 當表示垂直在上的正上方時，兩者均可用。如：
A lamp was hanging over [above[ the table. 電燈懸掛在桌子上方。
Wild geese were flying above [over] the lake. 野雁在湖上飛翔。
They built a new room above [over] the garage. 他們在車房上加蓋了一個新房間。
(2) 當用作副詞且與and, or連用，表示“……以上”時，兩者均可用。如：
You get an A grade for scores of 75 and over [above]. 75分或75分以上的分數就是優等。
Big-screen TVs are defined as 27 inches or above [over]. 在屏幕電視是指27英寸或更大的電視。
2. 通常用above的場合
(1) 當不是表示垂直在上的上方時，通常用above。如：
We’ve got a little house above the lake. 我們在湖邊高坡上有一所小房子。
(2) 當表示溫度、高度以及有縱向可比標準時，通常用above。如：
Today’s temperature is 10 degrees above zero. 今天氣溫是零上10度。
The town is 2,000 feet above sea level. 這座城市海拔2,000 英尺。
3. 通常用over的場合
(1) 表示覆蓋意義時，通常用over。如：
Spread a cloth over the table. 在桌上鋪一塊桌布。
(2) 表示橫過或越過時，通常用over。此時也可用across。如：
There is a bridge over the river. 河上有一座橋。
The terrorists escaped across [over] the border. 恐怖分子越過邊境逃走了。
(3) 當表示數量的“多于”，含有類似more than的意思時，原來可用over，也可用above。但在現代英語中，通常只用over。如：
The blue whale grows to over 30 metres long. 藍鯨可長到三十多米長。
Over 100 burglaries are reported every month, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. 每月報案的入室盜竊案超過百起，而這只不過是已知的一小部分。
(4) 涉及速度時，若要表示“高于”“多于”，通常用介詞over。如：
At the time he was diving at over 100 mph. 這時他的車速為每小時一百多英里。
(5) 涉及年齡時，若要表示“高于”“多于”，通常用介詞over。此時也可用past。如：
She didn’t marry until she was over fifty. 她直到五十多歲才結婚。
No tickets are needed for people over 65. 六十五歲以上的人無需購票。
I don’t know how old he is, but he looks well over [past] forty. 我不知道他多少歲，但是他看上去有四十多歲了。
注：有時也可用above，尤其是與the age of連用時。如：
We cannot accept children above [over] the age of 10. 我們不能接受10歲以上的兒童。
4. see above與see over
在書或文章中，see above的意思是“見前文”“見上文”，see over的意思是“見下一頁”，兩者意思幾乎相反，注意不要弄混。如：
See above, page 97 見前文，第97頁。

5. over and above
over and above為習語，意為“此外”“另外”，與in addition to同義。如：
There are other factors over and above those we have discussed. 除了我們所討論的之外，還有其他因素。
The city has spent $2 million over and above budgeted funds for the new stadium. 該市建這座新體育場的費用超出了預算資金200萬美元。
