◆mind v. & n.

1. 用作動詞，表示“介意”、“在乎”等，其后接動詞時要用動名詞；表示“注意”、“當心”等，其后接動詞時要用不定式。如：

Do you mind helping us? 請你幫我們一下忙好嗎?

I’m sure he wouldn’t mind your going with us. 我肯定他不會反對你同我們一起去。

There will be a meeting tonight. Mind not to be late. 今晚有會議，注意別遲到。

2. 用作名詞，表示“腦子”、“心思”等，通常用作可數名詞。如：

I’ve a good mind to go home. 我很想回家。

He has a mind for science. 他有學科學的頭腦。

We are all of one mind on this subject. 在這個問題上我們大家意見一致。

注：在某些諺語或固定短語中，可能是不可數的。如：

Out of sight, out of mind. 眼不見，心不煩。

You must keep this in mind. 你必須記住這一點。

3. 用于 Would [Do] you mind……?

(1) 該句型意為“請你……好不好?”、“倘若……你見怪嗎?”，用would 比用 do 更客氣委婉，但通常不用 will；其后可接動名詞(但不接不定式)或 if從句；接動名詞時，根據情況可以帶邏輯主語；接if 從句時，若句首用的是 Would, 從句謂語通常要用過去式。比較：

我在這兒抽煙你介意嗎?

正：Would [Do] you mind my smoking here?

正：Do you mind if I smoke here?

正：Would you mind if I smoked here?

(2) 對該句型的回答與漢語的習慣不同，注意回答是針對 mind 而言的，即：

(1) 表示不同意，可用：Yes, I do mind. /Please don’t……/Better

not, please. /I’d rather you didn’t. /I’m sorry, but……等

(2) 表示同意，可用：Oh, no, please. /No, not at all. /Not at all.

Certainly not. /Of course not. /No, go ahead. 等

以上回答大部分語氣都比較客氣，但有的語氣較生硬(如 Yes, I do mind)，要注意具體語境適當選用。

4. 用于 make up one’s mind(決定，決心)：

I’ve made up my mind to be a doctor. 我決定當醫生。

We made up our minds to spend our holiday in the country. 我們決定到鄉下去度假。

◆minute n.

1. 表示“幾點過(差)幾分”，是否用 minute 一詞，在英國英語和美國英語中有所不同:

(1) 在英國英語中，要表示幾點過(差)幾分，一般是用介詞 to 或past, 其中分鐘數之后一般應有 minute(s)，只有在 ten, twenty, twenty-five 之后才可省略(當然不省略也可以):

8:17 seventeen minutes past eight

10:50 ten (minutes) to eleven

(2) 在美國英語中，要表示幾點過(差)幾分，通常用 after 代替past, 用 of 或 before 代替 to, 且 minute(s) 一詞一般可以省略(不管分鐘數是否為 ten, twenty, twenty-five 等):

8:17 seventeen (minutes) after eight

10:50 ten (minutes) of [before] eleven

2. the minute (that) 有時可用作連詞，引導時間狀語從句，含義相當于 as soon as。如：

I’ll tell him the minute (that) he gets here. 他一來我就告訴他。
