《圣經》中規定：不可妄稱耶和華上帝的名字;妄稱上帝者，耶和華必以為他有罪。"You shall not take The Name of The Lord your God in vain; for The Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His Name in vain." 所以即便用“Oh my god ”也是用于感嘆美好的事物，贊嘆造物主的偉大。

同樣，當提及耶穌基督時，往往不說“Jesus”而改用“Jeepers”或不說“Christ"而說“Cripes”等近音詞。對“hell”“devil”等與宗教有關的詞也會盡量避諱。所以當你的確感到非常地氣憤，想說“What a hell”時，不妨改換成“What a heck”，這樣更合適。

另外, 美國人偶爾也會說“darn it”或“dang it”“dash it”來代替“damn it”(據說damn是“上帝罰…下地獄”時所用的咒語，牽涉到上帝，所以要避諱)。

不過，一般稍有教養的美國人都極少用這些粗俗或不雅的詞，特別是與宗教有關的，不像一些電視劇里那樣，把臟話當口頭禪使。
