如今外語學習已經愈加普及，始終不及母語的親切。我們都知道說母語的人是native speaker，那母語的英文是什么呢?

有些人會直譯成mother language，其實這是錯的。外國人常用mother tongue來表示母語，因為tongue 除了指“舌頭”，還可以用來指“語言，方言”，如 the Italian tongue 并非指“西班牙舌頭”，而是指“意大利語”。

我們常說的有“語言天賦”，英語里相應的表達是 the gift of tongues。“母語”在英語中用 mother tongue 表達，還可以說 parent language 或 linguistic parent。
