English，the English

這一對詞的涵義并不相同。

作名詞時，English的意義是“英語”，相當于the English language.例：

Engish is chosen as one of the official languages to be used during meetings at the UN.

英語被選為聯合國大會會議期間的官方語言之一。

English is also the official language in India.

英語也是印度的官方語言。

English有時可作“英國人”解。例：

My father is Scottish，but my mother is English，they are both British.

我的父親是蘇格蘭人，而母親是英國人，他們兩個都是英聯邦人。

The English have a wonderful sense of humor.

英國人有驚人的幽默感。

在現代英語里，不少人喜歡用Englishman代替(the)English.

作形容詞時，English的意思是“英國的”或“英國人的”，相當于 British.如：English history(英國史);English literature(英國文學);English traditions(英國人的傳統);English breakfast(英國人或英國式的早餐)。

下面舉兩個例子，以說明 English和 the English的區別：

Hard Times is an English novel，written by Charles Dickens.

《艱難時世》是狄更斯寫的一部英國小說。

The English belong to the white race.

英國人屬于白種人。

由上例可見，the English是“英國人民”、“英國民族”，相當于 the English people.

下面四點值得我們注意：

(一)Englishman一般不能分寫為 English man，但是我們可以說 every English man，那是指每個英國男人。

(二)The King’s English(或 the Queen’s English)是指“標準英語”而言。

(三)English English是“英國英語”或“英式英語”，即 British English，以區別于 American English(美國英語或美式英語)。

(四)English Channel是“英倫海峽”或“英吉利海峽”，不譯“英國海峽”，因為該海峽位于英國和法國之間。
