【故事梗概】

在磨坊旅館，旅館老板Montefiore女士把Marilyn和Richard帶到蜜月套房里。他們回憶了新婚時住在這里的往事。Marilyn告訴Montefiore女士他們已經(jīng)有了一個兒子。

Innkeeper: Welcome to the Watermill Inn.

Marilyn: Oh, Richard, it’s exactly as it was when we were married!

Innkeeper: And when I got married.

Marilyn: Even the old patchwork quilt is the same!

Innkeeper: My great-grandmother made that quilt when Teddy Roosevelt was President. In those days, when they made quilts, they cut patches from the old clothing of every member in the family so that each one would be a part of it.

Marilyn: What a lovely tradition!

Richard: Thank you for calling us.

Innkeeper: I remember you and your wife from the first time you stayed with us.

Richard: We were very young.

Innkeeper: And very much in love.

Marilyn: We have a baby now.

Innkeeper: How wonderful! A boy or a girl?

Marilyn: A boy -- Max.

Innkeeper: Do you have a picture?

Richard: Would a professional photographer be without a picture?

[He takes out his wallet of photographs and shows her pictures of the baby.]

Innkeeper: Oh, he’s adorable!

Richard: And very bright.

Marilyn: Like his father. A real Stewart.

Richard: And very good-looking, like his mother.

【語言點精講】

1. It’s exactly as it was when we were married!

這房間跟我們結婚的時候一模一樣。

這里的when從句是狀語從句，修飾 it was，而we were married意指 we just got married，即第一次來此度蜜月的時候。

2. Even the old patchwork quilt is the same!

連這老式拼花被罩都是原來那一條。

patchwork quilt: 百袖被罩，拼花被罩，即用小布塊縫綴的被罩。這曾是美國一種相當普遍的民間藝術。

3. My great-grandmother made that quilt when Teddy Roosevelt was President.

Teddy Roosevelt: 指的是美國第26任總統(tǒng)Theodore Roosevelt。任期從1901年到1909年。Teddy是Theodore的昵稱。

4. In those days, when they made quilts, they cut patches from the old clothing of every member in the family so that each one would be a part of it.

在那個年頭人們做拼花被罩時要從家里每個人的舊衣服上剪下塊布來，以便讓每個人都有一份。

so that: 意思是“以便；所以”。口語中that也可以省略。so that是引導目的狀語從句的連詞，等于in order that，從句中動詞多用 may/can/will 以及 might/could/would/should，以表示一種只是主觀企求達到的目的，而還不是真正已達到的結果。

5. I remember you and your wife from the first time you stayed with us.

我記得你和你妻子第一次住在我們這兒的時候。

the first time you stayed with us: 在 time 后面的定語從句常省去關系詞 that（或when）。

6. And very much in love.

也十分相愛。in love: 相愛。

7. Would a professional photographer be without a picture?

一位專業(yè)攝影師會沒有照片嗎？這句話是個虛擬語氣的反問句，Richard的意思是“作為一名專業(yè)攝影師，我當然有照片”。

Would …?: 這是常用的表示“詰難，抗議”等感情的句式。又如，Would you hit such a small boy? （難道你會打這么小的孩子嗎？）

8. And very good-looking, like his mother.

而且很漂亮，像他的母親。

good-looking: 好看的；美貌的。這是個復合形容詞。
