【故事梗概】

在駕車去PeteWaters的農場的路上，Grandpa在靠近切斯特頓的一個汽車加油站停下來加油，并意外的從加油站的工作人員那里知道了一條去農場的近路。

Attendant:Hello.WhatcanIdoforyou?

Grandpa:Hi.Fill’erup.Ineedafulltank.

Attendant:Checkthehood?

Grandpa:No,thanks.

Attendant:Whereaboutsareyouheaded?

Grandpa:PeteWaters’farm,nearChesterton.

【語言點精講】

1.Fill’erup.Ineedafulltank.

Fill’erup:給車加滿汽油。是常用的非正式說法。這是美國特有的俗語，專用于在加油站加油時；’er是her的省略音。為了節約人工，現在加油站常設顧客自己動手加油的油泵，這句話的使用頻率大為降低了。

tank:汽車上的油箱。

2.Checkthehood?

要不要檢查一下引擎、機油什么的？

美國是汽車王國，一般家庭都有兩部以上的汽車，各地加油站密布，大部分加油站都分自助區（selfservice）和全套服務區（fullservice），前者要顧客自己加油，后者由服務員幫忙加油，并提供擦窗，檢查機油等服務，價錢較貴。

3.Whereaboutsareyouheaded?

你往哪里去？

Whereabouts:哪里，等同于Where。在美國有些地區習慣于用這個詞。

beheaded(foraplace):是“朝某處去”，其語言略俗。

這是加油站的工作人員在告訴Grandpa去農場的近路。讓我們來看看其中的一些表達。

takethenextleftturn.:在下一條路口左轉。

astopsign：停車標志。在小路與大路交叉的地方，在小路一側常有寫STOP的標記，示意車子到此應先停下，看清大路上沒有撞車危險后再前進。

makearight:右轉。也可以說“makearightturn”或者“turntotheright”。

Stayonthatroad,andyou’llcrossabluebridge.:在那條路上開，你會經過一座藍色的橋。

barn：是美國農場上的大牲口棚，下層栓大牲口，上層貯飼草。有時旁邊還有一圓柱塔形建筑，貯藏飼料。亦指貯谷物的建筑物，谷棚。

5.Now,ifyoutakethatroute,it’sprobablyalotsimpler,butit’lltakeyoutenminuteslonger.

喏，你要是走那條路線，可能簡單得多，可是要多花10分鐘的時間。

alotsimpler:簡單得多。在比較級上添加表示程度或幅度的狀語時，要加在比較級的前面，又如:alittleharder（有一點難），muchbigger（大得多），aninchlonger（長出一英寸），somewhatquicker（多少快一些）。
