智慧書簡介：

A man of rectitude

做正直的人

rectitude n.正直

A man of rectitude clings to the sect of right with such tenacity of purpose that neither the passions of the mob nor the violence of the tyrant can ever cause him to transgress the bounds of right.

要絕不動搖的堅持正義的立場，無論是大眾輿論施加壓力，還是權力高層強迫施暴，堅決不能退回道德的底線。

But who shall be such a Phoenix of equity? What a scanty following has recititude!

但有誰能夠成為這樣圣潔的正義天使呢?世間正直的人可真鳳毛麟角啊!

Many praise it indeed, but-for others.

很多人對正直這種品德大加贊揚，但提到是否具備....還是讓別人來做正直的人吧!

Others follow it till danger threatens; then the false deny it, the politic conceal it.

還有一些人一直自稱正義，直到他們遇到真正的危機，這是虛偽的人就否認正義的存在，而圓滑的人掩蓋自己曾經的正義。

For it cares not if it fights with friendship, power, or even self-interest: then comes the danger of desertion.

這樣做的原因是，當正義與友情，權勢或利益相沖突時，就會六親不認，大部分人選擇了拋棄正義。

Then astute men make plausible distinctions so as not to stand in the way of their superiors or of reasons of state.

狡猾者編造道貌岸然的理由，以給自己認為更重要的事情鋪平道路。

But the straight forward and constant regard dissimulation as a kind of treason, and set more store on tenacity than on sagacity.

但心胸坦蕩，鍥而不舍的人，將此類謊言斥為對正義的背叛，繼續不屈不撓的堅持正義之路，摒棄對正義不公的借口和說辭。

Such are always to be found on the side of truth, and if they desert a party, they do not change from fickleness, but because the others have first deserted truth.

這樣的人是站在真理身邊的人，如果說他們對某些人放棄，并不是因為他們善變，而是因為那些人放棄了真理和正義。
