despite，in spite of

Despite用作介詞時，與 in spite of同義，都表示“盡管”、“雖然”、“不顧”之意，但程度有所不同。

一般說來，in spite of的語氣較強，使用范圍也較廣; despite的語氣較弱，多用于詩歌或正式的文體中。Despite可以寫作despite of，也可以寫作 in despite of;in spite of則可以寫作 spite of，但這些寫法已少用了。例：

Despite his advanced years，he is learning to drive.

雖然年事已高，他現在在學駕駛汽車。

Despite the drought，we expect a good crop.

盡管天旱，豐收依然在望。

In spite of the police brandishing their clubs and pistols，people showed not the slightest fear.

盡管警方揮動著短棍及手槍，但人們毫不畏懼。

We arrived at the station in spite of the storm.

雖然有暴風雨，我們依舊準點到達火車站。

應當在此指出的是，在現代英語里，despite和in spite of的差距已日漸縮小，很多人已將它們互換使用。

Despite除作介詞外，尚可用作名詞，表示“蔑視”、“憎恨”、“無意對待”之意。例：

The old woman died of despite.

那位老大娘飲恨而死。

He tripped me out of despite，not by accident.

他絆倒我是出于惡意，不是出于意外。

在上列兩句中，despite用作名詞，它亦可改寫為spite.
